The Bible is filled with miracles. Some of the most astounding miracles are those done by Jesus Himself. From turning water into wine to bringing Lazarus back to life, Jesus performed powerful acts that still fill us with wonder today. His apostles also performed amazing feats through their faith. But you might be wondering why we don’t see those kinds of miracles happening today. Can miracles still happen?
Can Miracles Still Happen in the Modern World?
The short answer is yes. A miracle can happen and they do happen. It just seems that there are fewer miracles taking place now compared to Biblical times. Sometimes we just don’t recognize the actual miracles that are happening around us.
Some people are also seeking the same kind of spectacular miracles that we read in the Bible. That might be a misunderstanding as to why miracles happen in the first place.
The Role of Miracles Today
“He is the one you praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes.” – Deuteronomy 10:21 (NIV)
Miracles happen through God’s will. They have specific roles to play which is why they take place. It is important to understand the role of miracles today to recognize the modern miracles that are happening.
On the Frontlines of the Ministry
Some of the memorable miracles that we read in the Bible happened as means of ministry. Most of Jesus’ miracles, for example, were done to teach and to show who He is. In the field of ministry where people are reaching out to those who have not received the Word of God, miracles happen to help in spreading the Good News.
Fighting the Occult
In the West, the main means by which the enemy is gaining adherents is through materialism. People are being drawn to the idea that serving their earthly desires or hedonism is the height of living.
The best way to fight the spreading of hedonism and materialism by the enemy is through the spreading of the truth about God and so, we don’t see that many miracles. However, there are places in the world, where occult practices are widespread and to fight off those activities, miracles need to happen.
It is only through God’s power that one can be freed from the grasp of the occult and that can lead to miracles.
To Convince Those Who Doubt
“Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”’ John 20:26-29 (NIV)
Sometimes, a miracle happen to convince those who are doubting. Like Thomas who said that he needed proof to believe that the Lord has risen, people are given signs to convince them that God is real and everything promised will take place. Of course, this does not happen all the time and to all those who doubt. God chooses who will witness these miracles.
To Show God’s Power
But the most common reason why miracles still happen today is to show God’s power. They might not be as awe-inspiring as the Parting of the Red Sea or the Feeding of the Five Thousand but they still leave a profound impression on those whose lives are affected.
There are stories of those who are healed from some terminal disease after praying to God. People survive certain deaths after they rely on the Lord. Those stories of miracles are just as remarkable as Biblical miracles that we have read about.
The Effect of Miracles
Miracles do happen, they all should have the same effect and that is to glorify God. All the miracles that take place in the modern world are meant to prove God’s power, compassion, and love for all of us.
Whenever we hear of a miracle, it should help strengthen our faith in God. We should always think that God is always there listening to our prayers.
In my book, The Miracles of Jesus Christ and His Apostles in the Bible, I discussed the need for people to reach out to God, through our Lord Jesus Christ so they can see miracles happen in their lives.
Let’s all look at the miracle happening all around us and praise God for them.
