4 Types of Biblical Miracles

“He is the one you praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes.” – Deuteronomy 10:21 (NIV).

The Bible is filled with miracles. Some of the most astounding miracles are those done by Jesus Himself. From turning water into wine to bringing Lazarus back to life, Jesus performed powerful acts that still fill us with wonder today. His apostles also performed amazing feats through their faith. But you might be wondering why we don’t see those kinds of miracles happening today. Can miracles still happen?

Types of Miracles

There are different reasons why miracles take place today. One of the most important is to glorify God. Another reason is because God is compassionate and those miracles are manifestations of that compassion.

We can classify the miracles that we can read in the Bible. One type of miracle is not necessarily superior to others. They are all manifestations of God’s power. It’s useful to be aware of the different types so we can truly appreciate God’s power and wisdom.

Miracles Over Nature

“He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” – Mark 4:39 (NIV)

Miracles over nature are those that were performed over natural things. One of the best examples of this is when Jesus calmed the storm. That miracle demonstrated Jesus’ power over the storm and the sea. All He had to do was to give the command. Ordinary humans would just have to put up with the storm and pray that all goes well, but the weather is at the command of Jesus.

Miracles over nature are perfect for showing how powerful God is. It shows our God is truly the one who controls everything.

Miracles of Supply

“Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.” – Matthew 14:18-21 (NIV)

In the Bible, there are two separate accounts of Jesus using a small supply of food to feed thousands of His followers who were stranded in the wilderness where there was no supply. These were amazing demonstrations of the power of Jesus. At the same time, it also showed Jesus’ compassion for people. He could not stand the idea of those thousands of people going hungry because they wanted to hear His teachings.

Miracles of Healing

“A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”   Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.” – Mark 1:40-42 (NIV)

The most dramatic Biblical miracles, of course, are those that involved healing. Jesus performed many of these kinds of miracles. As people learned about His powers of healing, they started to bring Him all those who were afflicted with sickness.

God created our bodies so He can heal them quite easily. If only we had faith in Him, then we would see so much more of this type of miracles.

Miracles Over Demonic Powers

“When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.” – Mark 5:6-10 (NIV)

This is the kind of miracle that is most needed right now because there are so many demonic forces working in our world. Unfortunately, people are unaware of these demonic powers. These types of miracles can set us free from the grasp of the enemy.

These are the types of miracles that can be found in the Bible. All these are demonstrations of God’s power, love, and compassion for all of us. To witness any of these miracles now would be an amazing blessing. But our faith goes beyond these miracles for we believe in Christ our Lord.
